Press Release: Date: April 7, 2010
Contact: Rebecca Behnke, 972-436-4333, 214-728-4560
Despite losing it's primary funding from the City of Lewisville, the
ninth annual Cinco de Mayo Festival will be held at Wayne Ferguson Plaza
on Main St. in Old Town on Saturday May 1, 2010 from 10:00 am to 5:00pm.
On July 27, 2009, the City of Lewisville notified organizer Rebecca
Behnke via email of the City's decision not to include Cinco de Mayo in
it's 2010 budget due to declining revenue from sales and property taxes.
Behnke thought the event was done. “I basically began praying to God to
show me the way and if he and his people wanted the event to happen he
would give me a sign. We started getting calls from vendors wanting to
do the event again. Then David & Tiffany Gonzalez-Yost walked in my
door. They truly embody their franchise slogan, Like a Good Neighbor. I
was so pleased to hear that they cared about this event. I was sure that
once we lost the City's backing that people would just forget about the
Cinco de Mayo in Lewisville. I did not know how I could pull this event
off without the City's help.
Behnke has received calls from various business owners in Old Town and
truly believes “It is important to keep the event going.” The event will
be smaller in scale and will truly be a grassroots effort.
Cinco de Mayo is a free event to the public. The event which is in it's
ninth year has awarded 11 college scholarships and has hosted an array
of local and regional talent including Mariachi, Cumbia and Flamenco and
Salsa bands as well as local area dancers and singers. The event has
also sponsored several boxing tournaments.
Local area businesses are encouraged to apply. Sponsors, Vendors and
Volunteers are still needed. For more information, call 972-436-4333 or
